Empowering Women, Strengthening Communities: A Livestock Initiative in Balochistan
Balochistan, a region of
immense potential, faces significant challenges with poverty and
underdevelopment. Livelihood opportunities are scarce, particularly in remote
areas. Recognizing this, a targeted initiative has been launched to empower
women and enhance food security through sustainable agriculture.
Livestock rearing is a
critical pillar for both nutrition and income generation in such contexts. This
program specifically focuses on the Kamori goat, a high-yielding breed
known for its excellent milk production. On average, a single Kamori goat
produces 1.25 liters of milk per day. A small herd of three does can
provide 4 liters of milk daily.
This milk serves a dual
purpose: it can improve family nutrition or be sold in local markets at
approximately Rs. 90 per liter. In either case, a household can secure an
estimated Rs. 350 per day, translating to around Rs. 10,500 per month.
This significant supplemental income is generated with minimal additional
labor, primarily managed by women at home.
To catalyze this change, the
program provides a set of four Kamori goats (1 male + 3 female) to
poor and deserving women-led households. This intervention is designed to
create a sustainable source of livelihood and empower women economically.
